More than half of children born in Texas are eligible for WIC

You've probably heard of WIC, the Women, Infants and Children's nutrition program. It has been serving families for more than 20 years.

What you may not know is that more than  half of all children born in Texas are eligible for the program.  In fact, Texas WIC serves more than 690,000 women and children each month.  Approximately 800 centers provide WIC services throughout the state.

What does WIC bring to the table?  Plenty.  For starters, WIC provides free immunizations and growth checkups for children.  WIC has answers to your health and nutrition questions.  WIC gives support to breastfeeding mothers and offers classes on nutrition, meal planning and similar topics.

WIC also provides vouchers for nutritious foods, including milk, eggs, cereal and juice.

Who is eligible for WIC? Families with children under the age of 5, and pregnant women.  A family can consist of a single parent or caretaker.  Family income is also a consideration.  A family of four can  have a gross monthly income of $3,084 and still qualify for WIC. See guide below.

If your family income is within the guidelines and you have children under the age of 5 or are expecting, call 1-800-942-3678 and ask for the location of the nearest WIC center.
